Our Gold Coast 600 race winning predictions

The Vodafone Gold Coast 600 will get underway this week, our editorial team at apexnews.co.nz have made their predictions on who they think will win the races at the Gold Coast 600 this year.

Steven Wright

My prediction could be an obvious pick and will benefit in the wet forecasts.

I think Shane van Gisbergen and Matt Campbell to win the Saturday race. SVG has won the last three Saturday races at Gold Coast and has a strong record at the circuit with top-five finishes at seven out of the eight races in a T8-built Holden and should be able to continue that trend.

The Sunday race could be won by Cameron Waters and Richie Stanaway. Yes both of them have never scored a top ten at the beachfront circuit but with wet weather expecting this weekend at Surfers Paradise, this pairing could be a very strong winning threat alongside the Van Gisbergen/Campbell pairing.

My race winning predictions for the Gold Coast 600 are Scott McLaughlin and Jamie Whincup.

McLaughlin has the record for the most poles in 2017, and qualifying is extremely important at this particular circuit as there are limited passing opportunities. Good qualifying and race pace for McLaughlin should get him to a win this weekend.

However, no driver pairings have won both Gold Coast 600 races in the same weekend. I believe the trend will continue and I think Jamie Whincup will win a race. Whincup has been the king of consistency in 2017 and I believe good pit strategy in expected rain conditions will help the six-time champ to win a race this weekend.

I believe the two Red Bull Holdens of Whincup/Dumbrell and Van Gisbergen/Campbell will be the ones to beat at the Gold Coast 600. I believe this as last year these two cars were unbeatable with two poles and two wins. I reckon Van Gisbergen will up the ante and go for his ‘all or nothing’ approach in the gold coast, as this round will make or break his championship.
