Championship leader Scott McLaughlin is set to have a massive blow to his championship challenge as the car has an engine issue before the halfway mark of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

McLaughlin has enjoyed the highest of highs yesterday when he did the record-breaking shootout lap, 2:03.8, which many are saying it ranks as high as Murphy’s 2003 lap.

Watch McLaughlin’s shootout pole position lap.

He made a mistake on the second lap gifting the lead the Mostert but recovered well until this engine failure which got reported in the coverage on lap 47.

The team ruled out a header issue during the lap 51 pit stop, but since then the car is back in as the team did a full systems check when they change the engine map as they hope for an improvement.

This is a massive issue for the Kiwi as he holds an 84-point lead heading into today, and Whincup runs 3rd at the moment while Premat is still in the top ten for now.
